Optometrists are licensed by the state in which they practice and are trained to provide specific services to their patients. This is what separates opticians from optometrists. Opticians are allowed to set appointments while an optician has to follow certain rules and regulations. There are no additional training requirements for opticians other than having a high school diploma. The opticians’ exam is often hard to pass, but it can be done if you take the right classes.
An optician’s main job is to read and interpret the charts that a patient comes in with so that he or she can make an informed decision on the treatment options that are available for them. This sounds easy enough, but when it comes to actually performing this task and developing the skill set that is necessary, it can prove to be extremely challenging. For a patient, it is not uncommon to have a series of tests and procedures performed over the course of several months or even years. This can cause the optician to have a very busy schedule which results in little time to spend with each patient.
A patient may come to the optometrist for a variety of problems ranging from seeing a new eye doctor, getting a prescription for a medication that has a strange name, or even to have vision correction surgery performed. The optician must then decide how much time to devote to each case so that the patient is satisfied with his or her care and the optician does his job well. When a patient comes to the office, the optician must explain the process of receiving the appointment as well as the steps that will need to be completed in order to see the recommended eye doctor.
This leads into the next part of the job: actually making the appointment. For this part, an optician needs to have some knowledge of his or her chosen field. The opt Pixie needs to know the specific laws and regulations in his or her state about being an optician and working as an optician. This is necessary because of the laws that are in place regarding practicing opticians in order to maintain a certain level of quality while still following standards that are set by the government.
Once the patient’s paperwork is done and accepted, the patient will get an appointment for a visual exam. During this appointment, the optician will take the necessary measurements to determine the eyesight needs of the patient. These measurements are important because they will dictate what eyeglasses or contacts the patient can wear. In addition, the optometrist needs to make sure that the patient does not have any eye diseases that would prevent them from wearing corrective lenses or glasses. After the necessary tests are done, the opt Pixie will make an appointment for the correct eye examination. This will then determine if the patient is a suitable candidate for lenses or glasses.
Some states require that the opt Pixie be licensed in order to serve patients in that state. Others do not have such a requirement. If you live in a state that does not regulate optician practices, you will need to check with the state licensing board in order to find out if you have to pass some sort of certification test in order to become an optician. Once you receive your license, you will find that working as an opt Pixie is quite easy!
